Review: Toby Keith's "Wacky Tobaccy"

Country Music's Newest Cannabis Offering / /

Toby Keith, who is perhaps best known for his patriotic country music anthems, recently released “Wacky Tobaccy,” an upbeat and playful song about cannabis.

While Keith is about as mainstream country as one can get, this isn’t his first song about cannabis.  His “Weed with Willie,” which, like “Wacky Tobaccy,” was co-written with Scotty Emerick, recounts a time Keith smoked with Willie Nelson. However, unlike “Weed with Willie,” the meandering “Wacky Tobaccy” misses the mark lyrically.  It’s unfortunate, because we like that Keith and Emerick are embracing cannabis, but the lyrics are just too sophomoric, even given the subject matter.

While the opening lines show promise as Keith croons about Wanda, an office worker who returns to work after a lunchtime cannabis session (Everybody in the office knew Wanda had been smokin’), that is the last we hear about Wanda. The song then devolves in to a listicle and goes full cliché with predictable cannabis references: from Cheech and Chong to Fritos to Humboldt County to a bubbling water pipe like Cypress Hill’s “Hits from the Bong.” It's all there, crammed into this three-minute song. And it feels forced.

Even the chorus lacks creativity, which one would imagine might be present considering the song is about “wacky tobaccy,” something known to enhance creative endeavors:

That old Wacky Tobaccy,

When you feel it creeping up on you,

That old Wacky Tobaccy,

Kick back and let it do what it do.

The song, however lyrically challenged, isn’t all bad. “Wacky Tobaccy” is catchy and may very well become this Summer’s, mainstream “stoner” anthem, and that could be a good thing for a culture and industry that is often relegated to the fringes of society.
